Large Turquoise Sphere
Peter Layton
Blown Glass
2010/2011
It's trying to represent how snow settles in layers over the fields and hedgerows. The black is used to create the silhouette against the pale grey sky and the outline of the branch against the snow. He has incorporated translucent icy blues and has etched the glass to give it a silky surface to achieve the tactile qualities.
The way he's layered the glass almost creates layers on a body except the colours are all wrong. It reminds me of human emotions and how many there actually are then they repeat once you've seen them all. It's hard to imagine unless you stick them all together and once they are together you can't believe the mixed pattern it creates and how beautiful it becomes.
